About The Relax 6C Silicone Cushion Liner
The Össur RELAX liners are scientifically proven to relieve the symptoms in around 80% of amputees affected by phantom pain* or phantom sensations. They provide a significant therapeutic effect. By making use of the RELAX range, a reduction in the cost of patient care and service may be achievable, since many patients attend for further socket and component adjustments, in an attempt to relieve their unpleasant phantom sensations or pain
The Relax 6C is designed to help provide pain relief for individuals experiencing phantom limb pain, phantom limb sensations, and idiopathic residual limb pain. The effect is achieved through the liner’s metallurgical knitted fabric (Umbrellan), which is incorporated into both the cover and liner matrix. This specialised fabric helps screen against electromagnetic influences, which may contribute to the reduction of pain and discomfort in the residual limb. 4 Electromagnetic shielding.
As evidenced in Fisher K, Oliver S, Sedki I, Hanspal R. The effect of electromagnetic shielding on phantom limb pain: A placebo-controlled double-blind crossover trial. Prosthetics and Orthotics International. 2015.

About Phantom Limb Pain
Phantom limb pain following amputation may be initiated by a variety of triggers, and considerably interferes with a patient’s daily activities. Although a number of treatments are suggested, painkillers are associated with unwanted side effects, and few solutions offer a lasting remedy. Electro-magnetic waves, either natural or man-made are widely accepted as a trigger for this sudden sharp pain in the absent limb.
Phantom Limb Pain is felt in a limb that has been amputated due to trauma, vascular disease, diabetes, or cancer. People may feel burning, stabbing, cramping, or electric-shock–like sensations in the missing limb. These sensations could be initiated by a variety of triggers that could interfere with a patient’s daily activities. Some commonly accepted triggers include stress or emotional distress, changes in the weather or barometric pressure, physical pressure on the residual limb (stump), fatigue or lack of sleep, poor fitting prostheses, nerve irritation or neuroma formation.
Why It Happens
The main mechanisms studied involve changes in the nervous system:
- Peripheral nerves: damaged nerves at the amputation site
- Spinal cord sensitization
- Brain reorganization in the sensory cortex
These mechanisms relate to how the brain continues to represent the missing limb.
About The Patented Umbrellan Fabric
Following intensive research and development aimed at achieving a lasting remedy for phantom limb pain, Össur created the innovative RELAX range, through application of the unique electromagnetic shielding Umbrellan fabric. Patented by Össur, the metallurgical knitted fabric; Umbrellan, relieves or eliminates phantom pain, phantom sensations and idiopathic residual limb pain, with no known side effects.
For The Physician
Before applying a RELAX product to a patient, it is essential to carefully analyse the nature and intensity of the pain experienced. A thorough assessment helps ensure that the most appropriate treatment approach is selected.
Patients experiencing phantom limb pain should consult their prescribing doctor, particularly when symptoms are unclear or difficult to interpret. Professional medical guidance is important to rule out other causes of pain and to determine the most suitable management strategy. Individual circumstances, including the patient’s medical history, current treatments, and overall health status, should always be taken into account when managing phantom limb pain.
