Össur RELAX Night Care Sock Transtibial & Knee Disarticulation – Provides Relief From Phantom Limb Pain for Amputees
Important Information
The Relax Night Care sock is a complement to the Relax liners because they can be worn at night as well. It can be used to help assess the effectiveness of the RELAX system for the reduction or eradication of the patient’s phantom pain or sensation.
The Relax Night Care Sock is designed for wearing at night, or whenever the prosthesis is not being worn, the skin-friendly Umbrellan fabric and Clima-Comfort® technology and properties of the sock ensure a high degree of comfort by transporting moisture rapidly from the skin to the surface of the stocking, thus, reducing sweating. At the same time, the skin has an optimal oxygen supply to prevent it drying out.
The Relax Night Care Sock is available in one standard length (35cm). Can be carefully sewn over for residual limbs <30cm.
The relax range provides a pain-relieving effect from phantom limb pain, phantom limb sensation and idiopathic residual limb pain. This is due to the metallurgical knitted fabric screening against electromagnetic influences. Umbrellan fabric is a unique, patented knitted fabric with an excellent electromagnetic screen. The materials used on the metallurgical base are hypoallergenic, climate-regulating and have antibacterial properties.

About The Patented Umbrellan Fabric
Following intensive research and development aimed at achieving a lasting remedy for phantom limb pain, Össur created the innovative RELAX range, through application of the unique electromagnetic shielding Umbrellan fabric. Patented by Össur, the metallurgical knitted fabric; Umbrellan, relieves or eliminates phantom pain, phantom sensations and idiopathic residual limb pain, with no known side effects.
About Phantom Limb Pain
Phantom limb pain following amputation may be initiated by a variety of triggers, and considerably interferes with a patient’s daily activities. Although a number of treatments are suggested, painkillers are associated with unwanted side effects, and few solutions offer a lasting remedy. Electro-magnetic waves, either natural or man-made are widely accepted as a trigger for this sudden sharp pain in the absent limb.
Phantom Limb Pain is felt in a limb that has been amputated due to trauma, vascular disease, diabetes, or cancer. People may feel burning, stabbing, cramping, or electric-shock–like sensations in the missing limb. These sensations could be initiated by a variety of triggers that could interfere with a patient’s daily activities. Some commonly accepted triggers include stress or emotional distress, changes in the weather or barometric pressure, physical pressure on the residual limb (stump), fatigue or lack of sleep, poor fitting prostheses, nerve irritation or neuroma formation.
Why It Happens
The main mechanisms studied involve changes in the nervous system:
- Peripheral nerves: damaged nerves at the amputation site
- Spinal cord sensitization
- Brain reorganization in the sensory cortex
These mechanisms relate to how the brain continues to represent the missing limb.
For The Physician
Before applying a RELAX product to a patient, it is essential to carefully analyse the nature and intensity of the pain experienced. A thorough assessment helps ensure that the most appropriate treatment approach is selected.
Patients experiencing phantom limb pain should consult their prescribing doctor, particularly when symptoms are unclear or difficult to interpret. Professional medical guidance is important to rule out other causes of pain and to determine the most suitable management strategy. Individual circumstances, including the patient’s medical history, current treatments, and overall health status, should always be taken into account when managing phantom limb pain.
